Acting Locally

Everywhere it has a presence, the Group works with local populations and associations to implement action programs for economic and social development, environmental protection and public health.

The aim is to exchange viewpoints and know-how and implement practical solutions that respond to local needs.

 

In India Lafarge's objective is to get an insight into the aspirations and perspectives of local communities, the Company conducts Socioeconomic surveys, Need Assessment Studies and Stakeholder Mapping, collaborating with leading social sector partners.

Lafarge is present in 78 countries around the world. In all of these countries, the Group helps to improve the quality of life for local populations by:

  • acting in favor of their natural environment,
  • contributing to local economic development,
  • helping to protect their health and defend their rights

 

Listening, understanding and meeting expectations

Lafarge adapts its action programs to the needs of local populations. The Group engages in ongoing dialogue with all stakeholders in order to:

  • explain its business and its objectives,
  • keep up to date with changing needs and provide appropriate solutions,
  • encourage populations to adopt a sustainable development approach.

Creating opportunities & livelihood

Lafarge initiated 'Ek Mouka' Employability Programme to impart
vocational skills and give employment opportunities to rural,
unemployed youths. Over 400 youth have benefited from this
programme.

Lafarge India through its foundation Nidhee is conducting
a Mason Training Programme in Jamshedpur to train and offer
placements to over 300 youths.

As part of the 'Unnati Programme',a Sal Plate Enterprise project was launched in Mejia (West Bengal), in partnership with IIT Kharagpur aiming at providing support to families from local villages for sustainable livelihood.

An agricultural livelihood programme 'Safal Krishak' trains locals of Mejia in mushroom cultivation and kitchen garden training.

Building sustainable future

In India Lafarge has established 16 computer training centres at Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal. The company has also initiated a drive to refurbish Aanganwadis in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. In addition Lafarge is also setting up model schools in Sunderhatu, Jamshedpur for local children.

Sustainable construction

The Group’s partnerships

The challenges of sustainable construction concern all players in the building sector. Lafarge works closely with industrial associations, energy suppliers and architects to identify building methods which are cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
